Ajanta Ellora is one of the main heritage of India. Caves of the world-famous Ajanta-Ellora have always been a major center of tourist attraction. The Ajanta and Ellora Caves located in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra are 100 kilometers away from each other, but due to their aesthetics and importance, the names of these two are always taken together. These caves made by cutting large mountains and rocks are a fine example of Indian architecture.

Ajanta’s Caves are located 101 km north of Aurangabad. You may be surprised to know that Ajanta is a group of 30 caves which is made by cutting the mountains in the shape of a horse cord and a narrow river Vanora flows from it. In these caves, many paintings related to Buddhism on the wall have been made along with many statues of Lord Buddha. These sculptures, decorated with the help of hammers and sugar are very attractive.

There are 2 types of caves. Vihar and Chaitya Ghar, Vihar is a Buddhist monastery which was used for stay and prayer. Here are small halls and cells of square shapes. Sales were used by Buddhist monks to rest and other activities, whereas the square space present in the middle to be used for prayer. Chaitya house caves were used for prayer. At the end of the cave, there are stupas which are symbols of Lord Buddha.

Ellora Caves

While there is a group of 30 caves in Ajanta, there are 34 monasteries and temples in the Ellora caves which are spread over about two kilometers on the edge of the mountain. These caves were built during the 5th and 10th centuries. The Ellora caves are the finest example of architecture built by cutting mountains and rocks. The temple present in Ellora caves is dedicated to Hindu, Buddhist, and Jainism.

  • The caves were discovered by Army Officer John Smith and his team in 1819. They came here to hunt and then they see these caves.
  • Some people say that there was a habitation of the Gods inside these caves. The god used to live here. That is why this place has been hidden from people for years. And when they were discovered, then they left it.

Bus facility is available for Aurangabad from Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Nashik, Indore, Dhule, Jalgaon, and Shirdi, etc. There is a hotel of the Maharashtra Tourism Department near Aurangabad railway station. Apart from this, you can also stay in Shirdi or Nashik.
